Article About Buying Gold in WoW

I wrote this article for ezinearticles that I thought someone would find interesting. I put a lot of sarcasm into this one. Obviously those of us who are earning tons of gold in WoW in a legit fashion find buying gold laughable. Anyway, here's the link.

Scanning with Auctioneer for Profits

To start off, if you haven't already, go to http://www.auctioneeraddon.com and get the latest version of Auctioneer and install it. There are great instructions and support on the site if you have any questions of how to do so. When installed, Auctioneer adds 4 tabs in addition to the three original tabs: Search auctions, post auctions, BottomScanner, and Transaction Log. It also adds a scan button to your browse tab. When you hit scan, it goes through all the auctions in the Auction house and records pricing info, such as buy-out price. The data is displayed on the item pop-up windows that appear when you hover over an item.

In order for Auctioneer info to be helpful to you, you need to make sure that the data is meaningful. If the pop-up window is telling me the price of an item, but Auctioneer has only seen it 2 times, do you think that the price being shown is accurate? Usually it is not, so what you want to do is before you you start using the Auctioneer data to try and profit is scan the auction house many times. How many is enough? I would say that scanning the Auction House twice a day for two weeks will give you some accurate pricing data on most items. Auctioneer probably will not have seen really rare items (like epic weapons) that many times, so tread carefully. Scan the auction house often to keep your pricing data current.

One you have accurate prices for your server, there's many ways you can use Auctioneer to profit. If you see an item that is listed at too low of a price, buy it up and relist it for more. If you see cheap reagents that you can use to craft, you can buy them and make something to resell for more than the cost of the mats. Also, the enchantrix addon that works with Auctioneer can tell you if you can buy a cheap green item on the Auction House and disenchant and list the mats for a profit. There's lots of things to do with Auctioneer, but make sure you hold off on using it until you have scanned the Auction House plenty of times and continue to scan to stay up to date.

The Auction House Alt: What It Is And Why You Need One

An auction house alt is a level 1 character created for the sole purpose of camping out in your faction's auction house. Your alt will live its entire life in the auction house and never level past 1. Your main characters mail any items that they want to auction to the alt, and the alt simply lists items and collect and holds the cash. Your alt mails his hordes of gold to any of your other characters when they need it. There are a few advantages to using an auction house alt.

1. Time savings: none of your main characters have to travel back to a main city to list items. This time saved traveling back and forth to town is substantial, and you will have way more playing time to do other things if you use an alt to cut out your traveling.

2. Inventory Space: Character's inventory full? Find a mailbox and unload items to your alt and head back out there. Bag-space becomes much less of an issue using this method.

3. Money Management: It's very easy to keep track of your in-game finances when all your money is on one character. Treat it like a bank account and withdraw money for your other characters whenever you need it.

4. Reputation: Your gold dealing for your entire account goes through this alt, including buy-low sell-high activities and hard-line negotiations. Players get possessive about their gold and items, and it's easy to make enemies through trading. Using an auction house alt, your players are shielded from this kind of exposure and can concentrate on other things.

Will Daily Quests Replace Professions?

I saw this question posed on a forum today and I found it interesting. It's true that a lot of players are reporting that they are getting large amounts of gold just from doing their daily quests, so they are a profitable use of your time. But will they replace professions? I don't think so.

Professions still provide players with things they need (like potions, gear, and enchanting reagents), and even if players forsake their professions for daily quests, there will still be a need for those items by the population.

What daily quests may be replacing, however, is farming for mats. With more players doing daily quests instead of farming, supplies of farmed mats on some servers is decreasing. Couple that with the fact that the players who aren't farming still have money because of their daily quest rewards, and you have a recipe for inflated mat prices. For those of you out there who are savvy gold-makers, you may see a nice opportunity on your server to farm some items that have increased in price, making mat-farming very much worth your time.

3 World of Warcraft Gold Farming Spots

I see a lot of people posting on the forums looking for good gold farming spots. I decided to feed the need and list 3 good gold farming spots that you can check out.

Gold farming spot 1: Shadowmoon Valley
Head to the southeast section of Netherwing ledge to farm Enraged-air spirits. They drop motes of air, and 10 motes of air can be combined into a primal air, which is in very high demand right now for crafting high level epic items. Expect to get 20-30 gold per primal air depending on your server. The drop rate is pretty good and you can also expect random green and some blue drops to sell as well.

Gold farming spot 2: Shadowmoon Valley
Still in Shadowmoon valley obviously, only this time head to the Legoin Hold. Here, you want to farm the Wrathwalkers, Terrormasters and Mo'arg Weaponsmiths, which drop Marks of Sargeras and Fel Armaments that are used for Aldor reputation. Marks go for around 60s-1g and the Armaments go for about 10g-15g. These mobs also drop a lot of Netherweave Cloth, green items, and some nice grey trash items.

Gold farming spot 3: Netherstorm
Head to the Arklon Ruins to farm Artifact Seekers. These mobs have a decent drop rate for Fel Hide, which is used in a few high level leatherworking recipes. A stack will usually go for about 20-25 gold.

These gold farming spots should get you started if you are a high level character. Hopefully they are not too crowded on your server and you can make some nice money. Check out Warcraft Wealth if you want a lot more farming spots (some of them most players would not have thought to farm, so you can have them all to yourself!)

Myth: "Players on my server charge unreasonable prices for mats!"

I see people on the forums sometimes making these types of comments and it makes me kind of chuckle. The fact of the matter is, the economy in World of Warcraft is as about as basic and unregulated as it gets. If you understand the concept of supply and demand, then you understand the Auction House. Most servers have thousands of characters on them, and there are only 7 crafting professions. That is a lot of demand for a small amount of materials.

Players list items at prices that sell. The AH charges fees, so there is no incentive to keep relisting items (more like a disincentive). Some players, in an effort to sell really quickly, undercut market prices by a significant amount (the opposite of overcharging!).

The conclusion here is that, for the most part, players are paying the prices that items are listed at. If these prices are too high for you, then they way I see it, you have 2 options:

  1. Drop your crafting profession all together and take up 2 gathering professions. You can take maximum advantage of the prices of mats by getting them and selling them all. If your character is getting rich, you can usually buy gear as good or better than what you could make crafting. You could also pay to load it up on enchants. Now, you may not be willing to do this because you think crafting is a lot of fun. I can't say I blame you. I think crafting is cool too, and we play the game to have fun right? But if you can't afford to craft, that is not fun either, so on to option 2...
  2. Make gold in other ways. There's lot's of ways to make money: farm items, daily quests, buy low and sell high on the AH (using Auctioneer for example). Warcraft Wealth has a lot of great strategies on making gold for lowbies and advanced players. Invest at least a little time in a gold-making strategy so you can afford things.

So you can make some money to afford those mats without much effort and still have fun in the game. Don't worry about what others are charging for mats on the AH, take advantage of the prices instead!
